Thinking over MLP:FIM S4E1-2
Thoughts on S4:E1+2: Princess Twilight Sparkle
This is, without a doubt, the most heavily hyped set of episodes thus far.  After all the endless controversy that the Season 3 finale brought to the fandom, these episodes have a lot of work to do.  Even moreso than the S3 finale, these episode bear the burden of making us believe that yes, all of the changes to the status quo that the third season made can work.  It needs to answer all the questions about Twilight’s new role as well as cover what’s up with Discord.  There’s a lot of ground to cover in just two episodes, and given FIM’s previous issues with pacing, there’s a lot of potential for things to go horribly wrong.  But have they?
I don’t think so.
In fact, I personally think that they tackled just about every major issue that they needed to, and addressed pretty much everything that had to be addressed, and they did so in a very interesting and fun way.  T

Thinking Over Double Rainboom
Thoughts on Double Rainboom
SPOILERS AHEAD
Okay, the first thing I want to note here is the criteria by which I'm judging this.  I recognize that it's a fan work made by non-professionals, and that it likely won't live up to the show's quality level, and as such a lot of the critiques I'm going to make are going to seem a bit on the harsh side.  However, I have a reason for this: the animation has been, for over a year at this point, touted as “the first-ever fan-made episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic".  That's a direct quote from DoubleRainboom.com's FAQ page.  The guy heading the project was quoted at Bronycon as saying "It'll feel just like an episode".  There's an obvious implication here: That "Double Rainboom" is intended to be comparable to an episode of the canon show, both in terms of production values and in terms of tone.  It's not labeled a fan video that's merely based on the show; it's labeled as something that's intended to

Thoughts on S3E13: Magical Mystery Cure
Okay, yeah, no matter what I say about this episode it's gonna be a minefield, so just don't freak out. It's just what I think.
So yeah. This episode.
I'm really not sure what to make of this one.  I can unequivocally say that I enjoyed watching it, but it's certainly not without its issues.  The best summary of it is a paraphrase of a sentiment I've seen on a few forums:
What happened is fine, but how it was shown needed work.
Basically, I have no problem with the events of the episode themselves.  The cutie mark switch, the alicorn thing, the fact that it's a musical, all of those things are fine.  I'll go into those later explaining exactly why I think they work, but there's an issue with the execution.  It's the primary complaint I've seen about the episode from multiple sources (ignoring the token OMG RUINED FOREVER groups who just can't get over the alicorn thing), and it's an issue that I can honestly

Tie-in
After “Just for Sidekicks” aired, I'd been rather curious about how much this episode would refer back to it; it's pretty much the only case in the show where two unrelated episodes are do tightly interwoven.    For the most part I think they handled it rather well. The two episodes stand perfectly well on their own, but if you've seen both you get a bit of a bonus because you know what's going on behind the scenes. The other nice thing is that Twilight's line about Spike doing a fine job with the pets actually has plenty of relevance in both episodes.  The significance in “Just for Sidekicks” is obvious, but in this episode it's a demonstration of Twilight's development. At the start she's clearly worried about what's happening, but after her experiences in the Crystal Empire, she's able to just trust Spike and not worry about it.
My only gripe

Thoughts on S3E11: Just for Sidekicks
As always, this review is based pretty much entirely on personal interpretation.
Surprise Surprise
I have to say I was a bit caught off guard by this episode.  I didn't really have high hopes for it, for a variety of reasons.  First of all, Spike doesn't exactly have a stellar episode record; at best his previous episodes tend to be decent. Second, the summary of this episode pretty much explicitly points out that the rest of the main cast isn't going to show up, which for me at least is another problem; my main gripe with most Spike episodes is that they focus too much on the “he's a dragon!” thing and not enough on his interactions with the rest of the cast.  Basically, this had all the hallmarks of being a filler episode; it's based almost entirely around side characters, and the setup basically guarantees a shenanigans-based episode.  Which it was, to a degree, but I think it ended up working a lot

Yadda yadda yadda this is all opinion, civil disagreement is fine.
Discord Returns
This is far and away the most important bit of the episode, so I'm gonna tackle it first: I wasn't expecting Discord to reform, but seeing how it happens, I don't see anything wrong with the concept.  None of it contradicts any previously established characterization or plot, so on that front I have no complaints about the fact that it happened.  I do have a few nitpicks with how they did it, but I'll come to that later.
A lot of people have complained that it was too easy, and that the whole thing fell into the "the ponies win simply by being nice!" and that it flubs the previous themes of the show.  I don't think it does.  First of all, Discord himself points out the title: Friendship has been established as a tangible power in the show from day one.  Second, while Fluttershy did win Discord over with kindness, he didn't

Thoughts on S3E9: Spike At Your Service
As always, this is simply my own response to the episode.  You're free to disagree as long as you aren't a jerk about it.
Not bad, just very subtle
I gotta say that more than any episode so far this season, this one felt really old school; like it would have been right at home in season one.  There's a really heavy emphasis on a character based  conflict here; it's the first episode this season that takes place almost entirely in Ponyville and doesn't really focus much on any characters but the Mane 6 and Spike.  It feels a lot more down to earth because the conflict arises purely out of their day-to-day interaction rather than some sort of event occurring.  Whether this is a good thing or a bad this is up to the individual.
It's still not perfect, though.
For the most part I found this episode pretty solid, but there were two things that bugged me a bit, one that was rather pervasive, and one that wa

Thoughts on S3E8: Apple Family Reunion
This review is purely my personal opinion.  Spoilers will be here.
Stuff that happened:
I'm just going to lead off with this: Overall, I think the episode is fairly middle-of-the-road.  There aren't any glaring flaws in it, but at the same time I think it lacks the ingenuity and punch to stand out, and as a result it's thoroughly decent.  The reason it's so hard to place is because most of the issue in the episode is a  result of the context in the show at large.  On it's own, the episode is pretty good.  There's nothing within the context of the episode itself that really damages it too badly. The problem is it draws a lot of comparisons to other episodes, and it doesn't always come off better for the comparison.   There are two basic thematic elements that it seems to recall:
1.The whole "a pony tries too hard at something and things go south really fast".  There are a lot of episodes that pu

Lightning Dust
Okay, I'm just going to get this out of the way now, because she's the single biggest addition to the episode.  I'm not gonna lie, I think that Lightning Dust was probably the weakest aspect of the episode.  It does NOT mean that she was handled badly, just that there were two aspects of her characterization that needed to be tweaked a bit.
The first is that I think it would have helped to develop the jerkish aspects of her character a bit more.  It was always blatantly obvious that her competitive edge keeps her from caring about anypony else, but it takes a rather blatant turn in the final scene where she basically explicitly states that she doesn't give a crap that she endangered the lives of Rainbow Dash's friends.  The issue isn't the lack of empathy, it's that it escalates a bit quick

Yup, time for another review.  As always it's just my personal response to the episode rather than an objective statement of quality.  Also spoilers.
Okay, let's start with the issues.
From what I've seen, the response to this episode was generally very positive.  While I definitely enjoyed it, I also think it has a couple of rather annoying issues.  Not so bad that they ruin the episode, but I think they're worth mentioning.
First off, characterization:
Don't get me wrong, the relevant bits of the episode (Scootaloo and Rainbow Dash's interactions) were great.  I have no complaints about that. And Applejack and Apple Bloom, while not stellar, were also handled quite well.  Rarity, though... it might just be me but she felt rather one dimension.  I get that her dislike of camping is entirely within her character, but I felt like she didn't really do anything in the episode except complain.

The Obvious
Let's face it, everybody was looking forward to this episode pretty much entirely because of Trixie, and whether or not they handle her well is going to make or break the episode.  It really doesn't help that there are a ton of different fan interpretations of the character; there's Woobie Trixie, Evil Trixie, Twilight Obsessed Trixie, etc.  Obviously, they aren't going to be able to play all of those interpretations.
As for me?  I think they handled her really well.  The writers managed to engineer a situation where they could go wild with Evil Trixie, yet still ultimately treat her sympathetically while keeping everything consistent with what we know of her character.  Whether or not you believe that Trixie was in the wrong in her debut episode, it's hard to not sympathize with her at least a little after seeing what happened to her as a result.  She was a jerk

Thoughts on S3E4: One Bad Seed
As usual, this thing is going to be comprised of opinions and spoilers.  In particular, this episode deals with a rather hotbutton issue (bullying), so don't jump down my throat if you don't agree.  You can disagree, just be civil about it.
The Big Thing
Let's get this out of the way: everybody has different stances on the issue of bullying and how this episode handled it.  Here's mine: I think it handled the issue about as well as it could, given that it's a show directed at children with only 22 minutes to work in.  It obviously didn't cover every aspect of the issue in detail, but there was really no way it was going to.  I know Babs has gotten some crap for being nasty in the episode, but honestly, I think the writers did a good job of making her sympathetic nonetheless.
I know the episode has gotten some complaints about how "Babs got off scot free because she was bullied and the episode is saying that if

Review of S3E3: Too Many Pinkie Pies
Like last time, I just don't have the free time to write a scene-by-scene recap, so I'll just try to hit the important bits.   Will contain spoilers and opinions.  If you don't want to hear either of those, don't read this.
Implications, Implications
Okay, this is the bit that pretty much everybody is going to bring up first: the morality of zapping the clones despite the fact that they're seemingly sentient, and the fact that Twilight does so so readily.  I'll start off by saying that I do agree that Twilight seemed a bit trigger-happy at the end, if there was a possibility of accidentally hitting the real Pinkie, you'd think she'd be a bit more careful.  However, I think it's largely a result of timing; there are too many implications brought up by the episode to adequately explore them all.  Yes, the test wasn't really perfect, but in essence it made sense; they recognized that the clones were far more manic than the real Pinkie, an

I actually managed to scrounge up a bit of extra time, I thought I'd throw out my thoughts on the new episode.  I don't have time to do a thorough scene-by-scene run through of the new episode like I did of last season, but I'll try to quickly point out the most important aspects of the episode.  So let's get started:
Spoilers will be present, obviously.
King Sombra
Okay, this is the big one.  He's been a bit of a mixed bag, for good reason.  I can certainly appreciate what the writers were going for here; Sombra is a very Sauron-like villain, he's more of a vague evil force than a real character, and we don't get much of his motivation or personality in the show proper.  It definitely makes him unique when compared to the other villains, although it doesn't quite work as well as it could.  The problem is that to pull off that type of villain, you really need to have a lot of time to build him up.  Lo
